An Alabama man and former U.S. Marine, Dustin Rigsbee, was arrested and charged with the murder of his 31-year-old girlfriend, Harleigh Dills, authorities say.

Rigsbee is charged with one count of murder after the defendant’s mother called 911 to report her son had killed Dills and was afraid Rigsbee, who had PTSD, might harm himself.

On Jan. 24, Dothan Police Department responded to a home along the 4000 block of Mance Newton Road, where they found the victim’s body with a single shot to her upper body. Crime scene investigators believe the murder weapon was a high-caliber firearm, reported WSFA.

Later, officers arrived to arrest Rigsbee’s mother’s home in Jack, Alabama, when he fled through the rear of the house before he surrendered after six hours of negotiations via Rigsbee’s cell phone.

Though the 31-year-old defendant has no criminal history, Rigsbee had a domestic violence history. The defendant was a known entity to authorities after his ex-wife filed a protection order against the defendant before the divorce was finalized in 2022.  The ex-wife, who remains unidentified, had accused Rigsbee of slapping and choking her in front of their children.

The defendant is currently being held without bond at the Dale County Jail.
