A Kansas woman and former news anchor will spend decades behind bars for killing her mother.
On Oct. 7, a Sedgwick County District Court judge handed Angelynn “Angie” Mock a life term in prison with the possibility of parole for the stabbing death of her mother, 80-year-old Anita Avers. Though the defendant was initially deemed incompetent in January to stand trial, in July, Mock was deemed competent, and she pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, according to TV Insider.
On Oct. 31, 2025, on Halloween Day, police officers responded to the Wichita home the defendant shared with her mother. They found the victim’s body with multiple stab wounds. Mock told investigators she believed her mother was the devil. The defendant further told investigators she had gone into her mother’s room to discuss a job opportunity, but instead found her mother sharpening knives. Then, Mock claimed her mother approached her with a knife, and she had to kill her.
“I had to kill her; she wasn’t going to stop,” said Mock, reported AL.com.
However, Mock’s stepfather, Barry Avers, told investigators that the defendant had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, which causes her to have delusions, angry outbursts, and to believe people close to her were not real.
Mock will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years in prison.
The defendant had worked as a morning anchor at KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City and FOX 2 KTVI in St. Louis.
