An Amarillo man, 35-year-old Michael Alexander Ferguson, was arrested and charged with the murder of his grandmother, police say.

Though Ferguson was initially charged with injury to the elderly, on Monday, Dec. 23, Potter County prosecutors amended the charge to murder after further investigation. A month earlier, officers responded to a home in N.E 14 Street after reports of a non-responsive 106-year-old Cecilia Ferguson.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered suspicious events surrounding the centenarian's death, reported 7 News. As a result, investigators brought in Ferguson for questioning and arrested the defendant afterward, despite denying any involvement with the homicide.

The motive for the killing remains unclear.

Ferguson is incarcerated at the Potter County Detention Center while awaiting trial.
