Being a mother has always brought Jillian Miles a great deal of happiness. However, she will miss seeing her children grow up, as her life was cut short on Feb. 19, 2013.
In the evening and on the day of the incident, the Dayton Police Department responded to the victim’s Parkwood Avenue home after receiving a 911 distress call. Miles’ neighbors had heard gunshots and someone running water. Though her door was locked, the responding officers could see her 2- and 1-year-old children wandering around the house, leading them to make a forced entry.
Immediately, they found Miles on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds. Soon, the victim was rushed to Miami Valley Hospital, where she succumbed to her wounds.
During the investigation, authorities discovered drugs in the residence and determined Miles had been a dealer.
“It’s not up to us to judge that. What is up for us to do is to find out who did this, because no matter what she was doing, she should not have been killed and taken away from her children. We have to have the public’s help. Without them, we aren’t going to solve these cases,” said Dayton Police Detective Patty Tackett, according to Dayton 24/7 Now.
Investigators claim the perpetrator must have been close to Miles due to the locked doors and the victim’s dog, which was aggressive towards the officers but silent in the suspect's presence. In addition, a neighbor told investigators he had previously heard people having an altercation next door.
“Hollering and screaming, cuss words everywhere. She would pack up the kids and get in the car and go somewhere. She would go down to the grocery store down here just to get away,” said Miles’ neighbor Bryan Castle, reported Dayton Daily News.
Despite the information provided by witnesses and the pursuit of several leads, investigators hit a dead end, and the case went cold.
Miles’ family members continue to seek justice by calling the cold case detectives and hoping the case will not be forgotten.
