Chicago native and rapper Durk Devontay Banks, a.k.a. Lil Durk, was arrested and charged with murder-for-hire plot in Broward County, Florida, authorities say.
Lil Durk was charged after four other associates of the defendant’s music label Only The Family (OTF) and co-defendants were arrested and charged for the shooting death of rapper Quando Rondo’s 24-year-old cousin Saviay’a Robinson, a.k.a Lul Pab in Los Angeles.
On Aug. 19, 2022, Rondo, Robinson, and some associates were at a gas station in the Beverly Grove neighborhood when they were reportedly fired upon, striking Robinson, who succumbed to his wounds later. Authorities believe Rondo was the intended target but survived the ordeal, according to XXL.
During the investigation, authorities discovered one of the OTF members offered a lucrative music contract for anyone who killed Rondo, whose original name was Tyquian Bowman. The motive for the killing stemmed from a 2020 violent altercation outside an Atlanta lounge that led to the demise of Lil Durk's protégé King Von after Rondo’s friend shot him to death.
Durk reportedly booked two flights from South Florida airports: one to Dubai and one to Switzerland, where he booked a private flight to Italy. However, authorities swooped in on the defendant before he could board the plane.
The 32-year-old Lil Durk won the 2024 Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his single "All My Life" featuring J. Cole. In addition, two Chicago suburbs had partnered with the defendant’s charity, Neighborhood Heroes Foundation, but had severed ties with the rapper after his arrest.
“While acknowledging that Durk and other suspects are presumed innocent, village residents have even higher moral and ethical standards of behavior. And our public partners must also reflect the same uncompromising standards. As mayor, protecting Broadview's interests and upholding the values of residents is job number one," stated Mayor of Broadview Katrina Thompson, reported CBS.
