A Saranac Lake woman killed her son-in-law and claimed it was to protect her daughter. Now, she will spend decades behind bars.
Hamilton County Court Judge Michael Smrtic handed Ann Marie Favro, 58, a life sentence with the possibility of parole for the shooting death of her 32-year-old son-in-law, David J. Chenier. Favro pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
"She had plenty of time to think about what she was doing, and yet she just went ahead. She took justice into her own hands, and it was her justice, not the justice of the people — her justice, what she thought she should d," said Hamilton County District Attorney Marsha Purdue, according to Times Union.
On Aug. 12, 2023, officers responded to a home on Big Brook Road after reports of shots fired at the residence. Upon arrival, they found Chenier’s body with a gunshot wound and later took the defendant into custody after a traffic stop.
Favro told investigators she shot Chenier to death because she was protecting her daughter. However, she refused to clarify her rationale to the authorities.
During the sentencing phase, the defendant’s daughter, Bailey Chenier, gave an impact statement and told her mother she was ashamed of being her daughter while she described her husband as a dedicated father to their children.
“I’m absolutely ashamed to say you are the woman who brought me into the world,” Bailey told her mother. “Know you no longer have a daughter or granddaughters. He was kind, he was funny, he was an incredibly hard worker and he was a proud and dedicated father who loved hard,” Bailey wrote. “This world is a much darker place without David here, and I would do anything in my power to bring him back,” said Bailey, reported Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
Favro will be eligible for parole after serving 17 years in prison.
