A Florida man who killed a popular DJ and the mother of his children will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

4th Judicial Circuit Judge Judge Tatiana Salvador sentenced Bursey Armstrong, 35, to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of popular DJ, Tasheka Renette Young, a.k.a. “TySheeks”, 34, and her unborn child. After less than an hour, a jury found Armstrong guilty of two counts of second-degree murder.

"You killed the mother of your children. You killed your unborn child ... (your children) don't have that mother and father to raise them," said Salvadore to the defendant during the sentencing hearing, according to First Coast News.

In July 2022, the Jacksonville Police Department responded to 12450 Biscayne Blvd after receiving a 911 call from Young’s mother, Olivia Young. She had found her daughter’s bloodied body on the bedroom floor, unresponsive, with her grandchildren in the same room.

Later, authorities searched Armstrong’s parent’s home, where they found his blood-stained clothes under the stairs and a 9mm Glock buried in the backyard. Though Armstrong showed up at the scene of the crime, he was arrested the next day.

Olivia Young told investigators she got concerned when the defendant sent her a text asking for her daughter’s whereabouts. Spooked, she called Young, whom she spoke with daily, and couldn’t reach her. During the trial, Olivia Young told the jury the defendant and her daughter had a violent relationship. She stated that two weeks before the fatal incident, Armstrong had held a gun to her daughter’s head.

In addition, prosecutors used his phone records, DNA, and other evidence to link the defendant to the crime.

During the victim impact statement, Armstrong lashed out at Olivia Young and told the court she had no love.

“When you’re guilty, you’ll say anything, you have no compassion. He never said I’m sorry and his children watched it happened and told me ‘Mema, Daddy killed Mommy.’ He watched it. The baby boy watched it,” said Olivia Young after the hearing, reported Action News Jax .

Young’s family described her as outgoing and generous. She worked with the Power 106.1 Radio Show.
