A Georgia man was sentenced to life after killing his neighbor because of a dispute over puppies.
A Gwinnett County jury found 75-year-old Stanley Nathaniel Elliott guilty and convicted him of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm for the shooting death of 44-year-old Anthony Collins.
On Feb. 25, 2021, Collins had been walking his Jack Russell puppies along Riverside Parkway when he accosted the defendant. Soon, Elliot pulled out a gun and fatally shot the victim. Elliot was identified through video footage that showed him interacting with Collins and raising his hands to shoot him.
Authorities later arrested the defendant and searched his home. They found the gun used in the murder in a motorboat in his garage. According to prosecutors, the two men had been involved in an altercation after Elliot had reportedly tried to hit the victim’s puppies with a metal rod months prior to the fatal incident.
"Violence – and especially deadly violence – is not the answer for solving any dispute. Our hope is that this outcome provides the victim's friends and loved ones with some closure and a sense that justice has prevailed," said Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson, reported CBS News.
Elliot was sentenced to an additional 5 years, and he will be eligible for parole.
