Former lovers, Veronica Fonseca, 54, and Anthony James Fox, 56, were arrested and charged with the cold case murder of 30-year-old Zachary Jackson. The two defendants were arraigned with murder and burglary charges.
"We believe they were both there, and that Mr. Fox was the one who pulled the trigger. We may not get you tomorrow, next week, next month. But keep looking over your shoulder, because you never know when the long arm of the law is going to reach out and touch you," said Alameda County Sheriff’s Detective Pat Smyth, according to FOX2.
On June 13, 1993, officers responded to a residence in Unincorporated Hayward, California, where they found Jackson, who was the father of Fonseca’s 1-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter at the time, shot to death. Though investigators knew about Fonseca and Fox’s relationship at the time, and after going over several evidence and interviewing witnesses, including Fonseca, their case hit a dead end and went cold for 32 years.
Though a witness came forward in 2014 to testify about the involvement of the defendants, in October, Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson made the decision to reopen the case after investigators had more collaborating witnesses who testified that the former couple was responsible for the murder. Authorities are not releasing any information since the case is still ongoing. Hence, the motive for the killing remains unclear.
"This is a good example of what happens when good people have the courage to come forward and tell law enforcement what they know," said Smyth, reported MSN.
Fonseca was arrested in New York, while Fox was arrested in Sioux, Iowa, and both are waiting to be extradited to California to face trial.
