A Texas man thought he got away with it after killing his childhood friend and her father. Seven years later, authorities arrested him.
It’s been almost a decade since the Henderson County Sheriff's Office responded to a home along the 20000 Block of Woodridge West after reports of a double homicide. Upon arrival, they found 47-year-old Gabriel McBride and his daughter, 17-year-old Beverly McBride, dead at the scene. Both victims had suffered gunshot wounds.
Despite several manhours and interviews conducted during the investigation, the case stalled and became cold after all leads had been exhausted. However, in 2021, a tip blew the case wide open that identified 25-year-old Lance Kaeden Rains as the killer.
According to the informant, who was a friend of the defendant, investigators were told that on Dec. 10, 2018, Beverly McBride had been sitting on the couch next to Rains when she was shot to death, reported CBS 19. That information was never made public by the authorities. In addition, the informant told investigators that the gun used in the homicide belonged to Rains’ grandfather and described it as a Smith & Wesson .357 revolver.
Later, Rains’ grandfather told investigators that they gave the defendant the gun as a birthday gift in 2021. Furthermore, ballistics tests revealed that the revolver was the gun used to commit the double homicide.
On January 10, Rains was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder.
"This breakthrough is the result of persistent investigative efforts, detailed forensic analysis, and the cooperation of multiple agencies. The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to seeking justice for victims and their families — no matter how much time has passed," stated a press release, reported by AOL.
Investigators believed the motive for the killing was a botched robbery. At the time of the fatal incident, Rains had been buying marijuana from Gabriel McBride and had gone to the residence with the intent to rob the victim.
After being confronted with insurmountable evidence, Rains admitted to the murders. The defendant was a neighbor of the victims and grew up with Beverly since they were kids.
The defendant has been held in custody on a $2 million bond.
