A German palliative nurse will spend decades behind bars after killing 10 of his patients and attempting to kill 27 others because he wanted to reduce his workload.

A judge sentenced the nurse, who has not been publicly identified, to life in prison for the death of 10 elderly patients and the attempted murder of 27 others.

According to BBC, the unidentified defendant had become irritated by patients who needed a higher level of care during his night shifts. As a result, the unnamed nurse between the period of December 2023 and May 2024, injected his patients with large doses of painkillers such as morphine and midazolam, which is often used for executions in the United States.

The defendant was arrested in 2024.

During the trial, prosecutors established that the defendant had a personality disorder, being the “master of life and death,” with a lack of compassion for his patients. In addition, they expressed that the unidentified nurse showed no remorse for his actions.

“The court stated that his crimes carried a particular severity of guilt, which should bar him from early release after 15 years, a provision typically available in cases of this nature. He will be allowed to appeal,” reported Global News.

Authorities are in the process of exhuming the bodies of patients who died while under the unnamed nurse’s care to identify more possible victims.

This case is eerily similar to another German nurse, Niels Hoegel, who received a life sentence for the murder of 85 patients in 2019. Hoegel also gave his patients lethal injections between 2000 and 2005. He was considered to be modern Germany's most prolific serial killer.
