A San Pablo man who fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in the car while her children watched from the back seat will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Contra Costa County Superior Court Judge Mary Ann O'Malley sentenced 51-year-old Lawyer Dushan McBride to 75 years to life in prison for the shooting death of 30-year-old Rashanda Franklin. McBride was found guilty and convicted by a jury of murder.
“This tragic case underscores the devastating reality of domestic violence, which claims far too many lives. While no verdict can bring back a mother taken from her children in such a senseless act of violence, this sentence provides the victim’s family with a measure of justice and accountability. It also sends a clear message that stalking and harassment are warning signs that must be taken seriously, and that those who perpetrate such violence will be held responsible under the law,” said District Attorney Diana Becton, according to Contra Costa County.
On April 4, 2017, the Richmond Police Department responded to the intersection of 29th Street and Rheem Avenue after they received a frantic call from Franklin. Before the call, McBride had stalked Franklin for weeks and had been waiting in a church parking lot that fateful day when the victim had attempted to drop off her children at school.
In a state of fear, the victim drove off with her children in the car and reported the ongoing incident to the 911 dispatcher. During the call, Franklin could be heard pleading with the defendant that she has her kids in the car.
Instead, he replied, “I ain’t playing with you,” before shooting her to death, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.
McBride fled the scene but was arrested by the U.S. Marshals and Richmond police in Sacramento.
O'Malley sentenced McBride to an additional 20 years and 4 months to be served consecutively to the life sentence.
