A North Carolina woman will never walk free again after killing a Wilmington resident at a nightclub.
A New Hanover County district judge sentenced Keisha Baldwin to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of 45-year-old Tammy Hayes. After a five-hour trial, a jury convicted Baldwin of first-degree murder.
“The defendant is going to spend the rest of her life in prison based on the senseless murder of Ms. Hayes. We are happy to get justice for Ms. Hayes and her family with this verdict,” said Assistant District Attorney Sean Spiering, according to WECT.
On Feb. 26, 2022, officers responded to a nightclub called “Edge Lounge” along the 1300 Block of S. 5th Avenue after reports of a shooting at the location. Upon arrival, they found Hayes suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite life-saving efforts by the first responders, the victim succumbed to her injuries.
"I'm scared for my life. She's bleeding. She's going," said the first caller to the 911 dispatch as she tried to stop the bleeding from the victim’s chest, reported Star News Online.
Investigators retrieved video footage that showed a female suspect dressed in all black shooting several rounds from a handgun before fleeing from the scene in a car. A couple of hours later, Baldwin, who was 30 years old at the time, was identified as the shooter and arrested.
Though the motive remained unclear, witnesses testified that an argument ensued between the two women before the fatal incident.
Two years later, the nightclub was shut down after reports of nuisance abatement.
