An Ohio teenager will spend decades behind bars after she shot her mother to death at the family home.

Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Carl Mazzone handed 19-year-old Nia Patterson life in prison with the possibility of parole for the shooting death of 47-year-old Angela Bates. To avoid a trial with insurmountable evidence, Patterson pleaded guilty to murder.

On April 26, 2024, officers responded to the 3800 Block of Grosvenor Road after reports of an unresponsive female at the South Euclid residence. Upon arrival, they found Bates with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving measures by first responders and the victim being rushed to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

Petterson was arrested at the scene.

“This situation is certainly a tragedy all around,” said Attorney Morgan Caruso, according to FOX 8.

The motive for the killing remains unclear. The defendant will be eligible for parole after serving 18 years.
