A Georgia woman has been arrested and charged with the alleged murder and mutilation of her lover after 18 years, authorities say.

On Tuesday, Angel Thompson was arrested by Fulton County law enforcement officials after the body of 24-year-old Nicole Alston was found cut into 13 pieces in a burning body bag on Dec. 6, 2007, along Whitfield Road and Stitcher Road, a quiet Georgia road. At the time, the victim’s body was beyond recognition due to her hands, feet, and head being missing.

As a result, the case went cold until 2023, when investigators used advanced DNA technology via genetic genealogy forensics to identify Alston’s relative and the victim’s identity as a New Yorker who was last seen in Manhattan before her disappearance.

According to investigators, Alston had moved to Georgia to be with the defendant, who at the time was wanted in New York for theft and identity fraud. Authorities believe Thompson trafficked Alson, who had intended to leave the relationship prior to her demise.

“We believe this victim was trafficked prior to her murder, that this involved classic domestic violence, where this young lady [Thompson] was basically not going to allow both her lover and, I hate to say such a nasty term, but her cash cow, the person that was bringing her money, go,”  Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, reported New York Post.

Later, investigators discovered the defendant had used Alston’s name and identity to collect social security benefits, food stamps, and section 8 housing benefits to the tune of $200,000 in an 8-year span since Thompson allegedly murdered the victim.

"She didn't deserve this," said Alston's mother, who described her daughter as bubbly, the life of the party, and easily approachable, according to 11 Alive.

Authorities are asking if anyone has any information about either the suspect or the victim; they should please contact Deputy District Attorney Will Wooten at [email protected] or (404) 612-6560.
