A 63-year-old unidentified Leelanau County man was arrested and charged with the cold case murder of 41-year-old Linda Marie Meteer, authorities say.

Grand Traverse County prosecutors charged the unidentified suspect with an open murder while they decide if it’s first-degree or second-degree murder, according to CBS News.

On April 27, 1989, the Grand Traverse County Police Department responded to the Hoosier Valley, where Meteer’s body was found a week after she was reported missing. At the time, her death was ruled as a homicide, and investigators followed up on every lead till they hit a dead end. As a result, the case went cold.

However, in 2024, Grand Traverse County prosecutors, in collaboration with the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and the Western Michigan University Cold Case Program, reopened the case. The university’s students helped digitize the case file and evidence collected 36 years ago. In addition, authorities hoped advanced DNA technology would be instrumental in cracking the case.

Then, on Feb. 18, investigators tracked down the unidentified suspect in Leelanau County, which borders Grand Traverse County. So far, authorities are keeping mum about the evidence that led to the suspect's arrest and his identity.
