A Florida woman who killed her granddaughter will spend the rest of her life in prison.

A Nash County Superior Court judge sentenced 74-year-old Patricia Ann Ricks to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the beating death of her 8-year-old granddaughter Christal Lane. Ricks pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and felony child abuse in order to avoid the death penalty.

“There will never be justice with this because it was an 8-year-old. And that’s something that touches the community and especially people that knew this fine little girl,” said Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone, according to Law and Crime.

On Feb. 7, 2023, officers responded to the defendant's home, where they found Lane unresponsive with blunt force trauma to her head and body. However, the young girl died on the way to the hospital despite first responders’ efforts to administer life-saving measures.

According to investigators, Lane, who lived in the same home with four other siblings, was beaten with a plunger and tased. Authorities reported that the beating took place in the master bedroom and the bathroom, with lots of blood around. However, Ricks' defense team claimed the act was unintentional and claimed the defendant was off her medication at the time of the fatal incident.

During the sentencing hearing, Ricks, who was teary-eyed and emotional, further claimed she loved all her grandchildren, who are between the ages of 3 and 15 when their parents didn’t want them.

Prosecutors, in a rebuttal, described a pattern of abuse by neighbors and her teachers at Cooper's Elementary School after Lane came to school beaten up and unrecognizable.  At the time, the young girl told authorities Ricks had beaten her because she failed to put lotion on her body.

Though the case was reported to the Department of Social Services (DSS) after the school incident, the case worker assigned to Lane’s case left her in her grandmother’s care.

"These were heinous acts, but positives came out of them. This did cause turmoil in the county but caused a lot of reflection internally in our agency as well as DSS and [the] school system," said Detective Sgt. Kevin Bissette reported WRAL News.

The defendant’s son, Fredrick Lane, and the victim’s father, along with other church members, were reportedly shocked and claimed that Rick's behavior was out of character.

Since the incident, the state has taken over DSS, replaced its leadership and hired a new director.
