A Maryland man, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who was suspected of assassinating the CEO of UnitedHealthcare Brian Thompson, has been arrested, authorities say.
On Monday, Mangione was arrested and charged with carrying a gun without a license, forgery, falsely identifying himself to authorities, and possessing instruments of crime.
"Our hope is that today's apprehension brings some relief to Brian's family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy. We thank law enforcement and will continue to work with them on this investigation," stated a UnitedHealthcare spokesperson, according to Eyewitness News.
Altoona Police Department responded to a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, near a Greyhound bus station after an employee at the fast food restaurant identified the suspect and called 911. Upon arrival, officers approached Mangione, seated and eating, and asked him for his identification. The defendant gave the police a New Jersey Driver’s License with the name Mark Rosario. While an officer ran his name in the system, Mangione was told he would be arrested if he lied about his name and if he had been to New York recently.
According to BBC, the defendant admitted that his real name, Luigi Mangione, had gotten quiet and started to shake. Further search of his belongings revealed a ghost handgun capable of firing 9mm rounds, often made with 3D printers, a 3D-printed silencer, and a loaded magazine with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
In addition, a U.S. Passport, $10,000 with two thousand in foreign currencies, and a three-page written manifesto against corporate America.
Mangione attended high school in Baltimore, worked as a data engineer in California, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. The defendant will be provided the option to be extradited to New York to await trial.
