Michel Fournier, 71, the husband of the Oregon woman who went missing with her two dogs last week, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, authorities say.

On Nov. 29, the Clackamas County Police Department responded to Highway 26 and East Miller Road, four miles from where his wife’s White 1992 Ford truck had been found earlier that week.

Four days before her body was discovered, authorities and several volunteers had been on a search for the 61-year-old Susan Lane-Fournier, who was reported to be an avid and experienced hiker. The search stemmed from concerned colleagues who reported the victim missing after she failed to show up at work. They told investigators it was not in her character not to call anyone if she could not go to work.

"We're just all concerned. It's not like her to not show up to work, not call and no one's seen or heard anything. ... She's a little bit eccentric but everyone up here on this mountain is a little bit eccentric.” Those were guard dogs. I mean, if anybody would get near her, they would lose their minds,” said the Susan Fournier’s friend Cari Gesch, according to People.

Despite the manpower and hundreds of hours searching the Green Canyon Way Trail area south of Welches for Fournier, the search party had been called off due to weather conditions. However, a friend of the victim remained persistent and found her body underneath a tarp 20 yards from the search area. Later, an autopsy report showed Fournier’s death was due to a homicide, reported CNN.

During the investigation, authorities discovered the victim had filed for divorce proceedings from Michel Fournier at the Clackamas County due to irreconcilable differences. Soon, the defendant was arrested and held without bail.

The investigation into the homicide remains active, and authorities are asking anyone with additional information regarding the case to contact the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 503-723-4949 or submit tips online.

Fournier’s two dogs remain missing.
