A 16-year-old boy in Aberdeen, Maryland, has been arrested for the murder of a 14-year-old student, authorities say.

The Aberdeen teenager was charged with 1st and 2nd-degree Murder, 1st-degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and other firearm offenses.

"It's sad that we have juveniles running around our country, not just in Aberdeen, it's all over the country, that we have juveniles running around with weapons and feel the need to use those weapons. It's gut-wrenching," said Aberdeen Police Sgt. Jason Neidig, according to CBS News.

On Nov 2, officers responded to the 200 Block of Center Deen Avenue in Aberdeen after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found 14-year-old Jai’den Alexander Winchester in cardiac arrest and with a gunshot wound to the head. Though first responders attempted life-saving measures, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later, investigators recovered a firearm and established through social media platforms that the homicide was not accidental. However, the motive remains unclear, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Winchester attended Havre de Grace High School, where his teachers described him as a funny, kind student with a big personality.

"The Havre de Grace Middle/High community is saddened to share the passing of Jai’den Winchester. We are deeply saddened at the loss of Jai’den and will always remember him as a friend and Warrior forever. We will focus our concern on the well-being of our Warrior family as we cope with this tragic loss," said principal Brad Spence, reported FOX 45 News.
