He was looking forward to retiring and spending some time with his sons. Instead, fate dealt a blow to Marco Clewis’ dream after he was shot to death in his home.

Though Clewis’ son, Marco Clewis Jr., was usually with his mother, on Oct. 23, 2018, the victim suddenly insisted on spending time with the toddler, not knowing that would be the last time he would hold him. Around 12:30 am the next day, neighbors heard gunshots from Clewis’ residence.

Next, they observed the victim’s elder brother, Earl Clewis, 51, who lived just yards away, getting in his car to pursue the assailants. During the high-speed chase, he lost control of the vehicle moments later and crashed into a tree in the 3600 Block of Elsie Fay Heggins Street. Earl Clewis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers who had responded to Marco Clewis’ home in the 4200 block of Copeland Street found the 40-year-old victim dead with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Unbeknown to the mother of both men, Earline Caldwell, 66, had been calling Earl Clewis to inform him about his brother’s murder when she was also informed of his demise.

Over the years, investigators have been unable to identify any suspects that would lead to any arrest to date. However, the victim’s mother believes the killing was personal and not because of a robbery gone wrong.

“He wouldn't open the door for a stranger. He opened the door and was comfortable enough to turn his back, and that's when they shot him in the back of the head. He still had his jewelry on. He still had his money in his pocket. So, it was definitely personal," said Caldwell, reported The Dallas Morning News.

Clewis’ fiancée, Ameenah Muhammad, described him as outgoing and hard-working. He volunteered at different churches and fed many homeless people.

“The funeral was very sad. Him and his brother’s funeral was at the same time. You can never really say how long someone’s going to grieve. People say as time goes by you will get better, but that’s not always the case. You just learn how to deal with things but it doesn’t mean you got over what actually happened,” said Muhammad, according to Project: Cold Case.

Three months after the demise of both brothers, Caldwell’s third son, Matthew Clewis, 43, who had suffered from seizures after being shot in the head at the age of 14, succumbed after another major seizure. Both Marco and Earl Clevis had been his caretaker.

If anyone has any information that would help identify Marco’s killer, please contact the Dallas Police Department at (214) 671-3584. To maintain anonymity and possibly be eligible for a reward, call Crime Stoppers at (214) 373-TIPS.
