Two British men who stabbed a footballer for bumping into them will spend almost three decades behind bars.
Birmingham Crown Court Judge Paul Farrer KC handed Remi Gordon and Kami Carpenter a life term in prison with the possibility of parole for the stabbing death of former Birmingham City academy player Cody Fisher, 23. After a ten-week trial, Gordon and Carpenter were found guilty and convicted of murder.
"In short, this was a sustained attack on a man who was significantly outnumbered and stood little or no chance of defending himself. The attack ended when Kami Carpenter stabbed Cody Fisher in the chest," said Farrer, according to BBC.
On Dec. 24, 2022, Fisher accidentally bumped into Gordon at another event at a Popworld venue in Solihull. Minutes later, the defendant sent messages on Snapchat asking friends to identify the victim as he threatened to “shank him up.” Then, Gordon hatched a plan with his co-defendant Carpenter to shank the football player. A day after Christmas in 2022, officers responded to Crane nightclub in Digbeth, where Gordon and Carpenter assaulted and stabbed the victim.
According to prosecutors, the defendants, while masked, surrounded Fisher before Carpenter slapped his phone from his hand, followed by a headbutt. Soon, the duo threw multiple punches at Fisher, thereby fracturing his jaw on both sides, before Carpenter fatally stabbed the victim in the chest. Fisher died at the scene.
“I instilled in Cody from a young boy that he must stick up for himself and don’t let anyone bully him. I told him that sad, weak individuals do exist in our society and they ruin lives – how ironic and saddening that this is exactly what happened to Cody. He was only doing what his mum told him to do, and I think about this every day, but you never expect your child to be murdered,” said Fisher’s mother Tracey Fisher, reported The Telegraph.
Gordon will be eligible for parole after serving 26 years, while Carpenter will be eligible for early release after serving 25 years.
Currently, the attorney general’s office is considering appealing the sentence, which received a referral arguing that it was too lenient.
