An Indian military officer whose leave of absence application was denied and killed two of his superior officers will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Recently, Bishalgarh’s Additional Session Judge Debasish Kar handed Rifle man Sukanta Das a life term in prison for the shooting death of Officers Naike Subedar Marka Singh Jamatia and Naike Subedar Kiran Kumar Jamatia. Das was found guilty and convicted of murder after prosecutors submitted 38 witness statements during the trial.

On Dec. 4, 2021, the TSR post at ONGC’s Gas Gathering Station in Konaban, Sepahijala district, popped on the authorities’ radar after shots rang out and two officers died. According to Tripura Info, Das, who is from another tribe as the victims, had gotten frustrated watching them grant others their leave and deliberately sitting on the approval of his application. As a result, the defendant shot Singh Jamatia and Kumar Jamatia to death at point-blank range before surrendering himself and his rifle at the Madhupur Police Station.

Das admitted to the killings, and he was immediately arrested.

During the sentencing hearing, Kar ordered Das to pay a fine of fifty thousand rupees in addition to the life sentence imposed. However, he admonished officers to be diligent with their jobs and remain sensitive to the plight of their riflemen in the near future, reported The Hindu.

Das will spend an additional year in prison if he fails to pay the fine.
