A Florida man killed an associate in a drive-by, then went on social media to flash the booty. Now, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Last week, 7th Circuit Court Judge Karen Foxman handed Toriano Brooks, 31, a mandatory life sentence for the shooting death of Kavon Banks, 35, of Deltona, Florida. After a three-day trial, Brooks was found guilty and convicted by a jury of second-degree murder with a firearm.
On June 20, 2021, officers responded along a drainage ditch in a wooded area close to South State Road 415 and Lake Ashby Road in New Smyrna Beach after a witness saw a car speeding off and sighting a body. Upon arrival, they found Banks’ body dumped with four gunshot wounds. According to Volusia County State Attorney’s Office, the victim had been riding in a car with a co-defendant, Montrez Hamilton, 30, when Brooks and another co-defendant, Isaiah Devonta Moore, 24, fatally shot the victim.
A day prior to the incident, the defendant and Hamilton had been in an apartment in Deland, planning how to make some money. In addition, Bank’s family members told authorities they had last seen the victim driving off with Hamilton before his demise. Later, investigators found Brooks and Moore flashing stacks of cash on social media.
“These defendants have no respect for the sanctity of human life. As soon as they killed the victim, they were flashing stacks of cash on social media. Brooks will now spend the rest of his life behind bars for the murder. We will also be seeking the maximum penalty for Moore,” said Volusia County State Attorney R.J. Larizza, reported The Daytona Beach Journal.
Moore was convicted of manslaughter with a weapon and faces a 30-year sentence, while Hamilton pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to a life felony. Hamilton is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday.
