An Ohio man wanted for the murder of his stepfather was killed after an intense stand-off by police in West Virginia, said authorities.

On September 9, West Virginia State Police, in collaboration with Kenova Police, had been searching for the whereabouts of David Maynard, 54.

The fugitive had been on the run since Ironton police discovered his stepfather's lifeless body in an Ohio residence. They also found Maynard’s ex-girlfriend tied up in the home.

"They heard a woman screaming for help inside, so they forced their way into the rear door, got inside found the woman. She was tied up in a bedroom there," said Ironton Police Chief Dan Johnson, reported Hindustan Times.

After a long while without sighting the defendant, they called off the search. However, an officer on his way home stopped by a Speedway convenience store in Ceredo when he identified Maynard behind the clerk at the counter.

Immediately, the suspect zeroed in on the trooper and pointed a pistol at him before taking three other people hostage in the store. Soon, a West Virginia Special Response and a hostage negotiation team descended on the scene.

Several hours went by that led to the release of two hostages. Then, in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Maynard requested some blankets to be left at the store entrance. According to Metro News, officers exchanged gunshots with Maynard when the suspect attempted to retrieve the blanket and struck him. The third hostage was not harmed.

The suspect was rushed to Cabell Huntington Hospital, where he later died.
