A man arrested on homicide charges evaded the police at George Washington University Hospital in Washington D.C., said authorities.

The police described the suspect as Christopher Patrick Haynes, a 30-year-old African American, about six feet tall, with shoulder-length dreadlocks.

On Wednesday, Haynes was arrested in Virginia and extradited to Washington D.C., but claimed he needed medical attention for an old wound. As a result, the suspect was brought to the emergency room.

Authorities are not saying if the suspect is armed, but a shelter-in-place order went into effect on the George Washington University campus starting around 3 p.m. and was later lifted just before 8:30 p.m.

The Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department described Haynes as wearing a jumpsuit with a black T-shirt and shorts gray shorts underneath. In addition, authorities said the fugitive still has a handcuff dangling from one of his wrists.

"While the suspect has not been apprehended, he is not believed to be in our area. Please continue to use caution if you move around the Foggy Bottom area," stated the university, according to NBC4 Washington.

Other federal agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service, have been mobilized to join the search. The FBI is offering a reward of $10,000 for information that will lead to Haynes’ arrest. The public is warned not to engage the suspect.

Anyone with a tip should call the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099.
