A Texas man killed his lover and son over child support payments. Now, he will remain behind bars for the rest of his life.

Latterly, a 49th State District Court judge sentenced former United States Border Patrol agent Ronald Anthony Burgos Avilés, 33, to two life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole for the brutal death of Grizelda Hernandez, 28, and 20-month-old Dominick Alexander Hernandez. After seven days of trial and four hours of deliberation, Burgos Avilés was found guilty and convicted by a jury of two counts of capital murder.

On April 9, 2018, police officers responded to a 911 distress call placed by the defendant regarding a homicide. Upon arrival at Father McNaboe Park, authorities discovered the bodies of Hernandez and her baby. In addition, investigators found visible marks of violence on the victims and established Burgos Avilés had been in a relationship with Hernandez. As a result, the defendant was immediately placed in custody.

According to prosecutors, Hernandez had informed the defendant that their son was ill and having difficulties walking. The news of the child’s health status came after she served Burgos Avilés with child support documents. Then, the defendant requested the unsuspecting Hernandez to bring Dominick to the park before she took him to the doctor.

During the trial, a video and pictures of Dominick’s first and only birthday was shown to the jury. Also, family members testified Burgos Avilés lived with another woman at the time of the incident. The couple also had children together.

Prosecutors argued for the death penalty during sentencing, but the jury chose a life sentence.

“We believe the case that we had met those requirements, the jury disagreed. They did find him to be a future danger. At the same time, they found there are circumstances or circumstances that life without the possibility of parole was justified. That’s their decision,” said Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz, reported KGNS.

Burgos Avilés was ordered to serve both life sentences consecutively at the Huntsville State Penitentiary.
