An Army Sergeant will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he attacked several women at the Fort Cavazos barracks in Texas.

Military Judge Col. Maureen Kohn sentenced Greville Clarke to life in prison with eligibility for parole for the attempted premeditated murder, rape and kidnapping of several women. Clarke was found guilty and convicted after a court-martial without a jury of assault with the intent to commit rape, burglary, robbery, aggravated sexual contact, aggravated assault, assault with intent to commit kidnapping, assault consummated by battery, indecent visual recording and obstruction of justice.

“I am incredibly proud of the five survivors of Sgt. Clarke’s violence for standing strong against him during the trial. It has been my honor to walk with them on the journey to receive justice for the heinous acts the accused carried out against them. May they now begin their lifelong paths of healing and vindication, knowing their voices have ensured the accused is held accountable for his crimes,” said the prosecutor with the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel, Maj. Allyson Montgomery, according to Stars and Stripes.

The defendant was involved in five separate attacks that started in March 2021 after he broke into a woman’s room on the barracks while she slept. In another attack, Clarke broke into another woman’s room, but fled the scene after hearing the voice of her roommate. At this juncture, the defendant had started wearing sunglasses, gloves, and a mask to conceal his identity.

In July 2022, the defendant pointed a loaded gun at another victim before strangling her with a lamp cord and then shoving her in a footlocker. However, she managed to escape after Clarke thought she was dead. Three months later, Clarke threatened another woman with a gun, before he bound her with a rope, blindfolded and raped her. The defendant was arrested after the victim escaped.

Clarke’s defense team argued for a lesser sentence due to factors such as abuse inflicted on the defendant by his step-mother as a child, and the death of his biological mother at the age of two.

“It was hard to accept that my nephew, my nephew who I raised differently, did this. I feel your pain, and I apologize on behalf of my nephew, myself, and my family. I sincerely apologize,” said Clarke’s aunt Sondra Logan who raised the defendant after the passing of his stepmother during the sentencing hearing, reported Killen Daily Herald.

Kohn sentenced Clarke to additional 112 years for the rape and other related charges. The defendant will serve the sentences consecutively.
