A Massachusetts man was sentenced to life for killing his wife after a physical altercation while the couple was in a divorce proceeding.
Lowell Superior Court Justice Patrick Haagan handed Hongyan Sun, 49, a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the beating death of his wife, Shen Cai. A jury convicted Sun of first-degree murder, according to Boston.com.
On May 29, Lexington police officers responded to a street close to the couple’s home after Cai’s body was found in her car. Later, an autopsy report showed that the victim died of mechanical asphyxiation, and she had suffered several injuries as a result of a physical altercation.
Soon, investigators discovered the 49-year-old Cai and her husband had been in a divorce proceeding when the altercation happened a day before the body was found. Later, Sun admitted to the altercation, in addition to several injuries found on his body? They were consistent with the injuries on his wife.
During the investigation, Cai’s friend told authorities the victim had told her,” if she was ever found dead, it would be a homicide and not by suicide,” reported CBS News. In addition, surveillance footage and phone records showed Sun had moved the body and staged the scene where Cai’s body was found.
After 15 search warrants, Sun was later arrested.
Cai is survived by a daughter.
