A Mississippi man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after attempting to kill a police officer, which resulted in the death of his brother.
A Hinds County judge sentenced 33-year-old Chauncey Reed to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of his brother, Elliot Reed, and the attempted murder of Jackson Police Officer Michael Tarrio. Reed was found guilty and convicted of first-degree murder in connection to the death of his brother and attempted murder after a jury trial.
“This case is heartbreaking on every level. A routine traffic stop turned into a deadly shootout. One brother lost his life, and another will spend his in prison. Officer Tarrio’s bravery that night was extraordinary, and I am grateful to our Hinds County judiciary for their dedication to upholding justice in even the most difficult cases,” said Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, reported WLBT.
On May 19, 2018, Tarrio pulled over a white SUV with both brothers as occupants near the Valero gas station on Cooper Road during a routine traffic stop. As the officer approached the vehicle, Elliot Reed stepped out of the driver's side of the SUV and assaulted Tarrio while attempting to take his gun from him.
While both men were in a physical altercation, Chauncey Reed retrieved an assault rifle from the SUV and aimed it at the officer. Soon, a shootout ensued between both brothers and the officers, which led Tarrio to shoot Elliot Reed, killing him, and Chauncey Reed arrested.
The altercation and shootout were captured on the gas station's security surveillance camera.
According to WJTV, the judge sentenced Chauncey Reed to an additional 20 years for the attempted murder charge, which will run concurrently. The defendant is currently in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
