A South Carolina woman who fled to Mexico to evade law enforcement will spend decades behind bars for killing a Summerville man.
Berkeley County Court Judge David Caraker Jr. handed Jennifer Mae Todus 20 years in prison for the shooting death of 20-year-old Caleb Mitchell. Todus pleaded guilty to kidnapping and voluntary manslaughter.
On July 8, 2022, officers responded to Isaac Apartments in Summerville after reports of disturbance and altercation at the pool area of the complex. Upon arrival, officers settled the dispute and departed the scene. However, they were called back an hour later to the exact location, but this time for reports of a shooting. When the officers arrived, they found Mitchell suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Five days later, authorities declared Todus, who was 34 years old then, and two other teens, ages 14 and 16, suspects in connection to the killing. However, the trio had fled to Mexico but were later apprehended on July 22, 2022.
“Our detectives worked endlessly, around the clock, to piece together the evidence to bring the suspects to justice. From the beginning, we worked to identify the suspects involved and began an immediate search for their location. We thank the U.S. Marshal Service for their assistance in assisting us bringing the suspects back into the country to be charged accordingly,” said Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis, reported Live 5 News.
Though the teenagers remain unidentified, they were charged with murder and handed to the state’s Department of Juvenile Justice.
