A Georgia man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after killing his father’s tenant during a heated argument.
Dekalb Superior Court Chief Judge Shondeana Morris sentenced Danny Hunter to life in prison for the shooting death of 40-year-old Kateasha Cardell. Hunter was found guilty and convicted of felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault.
"This senseless act of violence has left a family grieving and has forever altered lives," stated DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston, reported FOX 5.
Around 4 pm, on Sept. 22, 2021, police officers responded to unincorporated Decatur on Dove Valley Road, where they found Cardell with a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim was rushed to Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center, where she succumbed to her wounds. According to WCTV, Cardell and her fiancée Karlo Dupree, 48, had been involved in a heated exchange with their landlord after the defendant’s father shut off their utilities in an attempt to force them off his property. Furthermore, Cardwell discovered some discrepancies in her bank account due to alleged charges by the landlord.
As the couple argued with the landlord, the 34-year-old Hunter went into their home, retrieved a revolver, and shot Cardwell before shooting at Dupree, who fled the scene in his car and sought help at the Dekalb County jail. Soon, the defendant was arrested after claiming he shot Cardwell in self-defense. However, authorities found no evidence the couple were armed or posed a security to Hunter or his father.
Cardwell is survived by two children.
