A McDonough man, Lavaniel Davis, 23, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after killing a teen to rob him of some marijuana.
Davis was found guilty and convicted by a Dekalb jury of three counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, criminal solicitation, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony for the shooting death of 18-year-old Trevon Richardson, according to FOX 5.
On May 28, 2018, officers responded to a parking lot of an apartment complex located on Peppertree Circle in unincorporated Decatur after reports of an unresponsive individual at the scene. Upon arrival, they found Richardson’s body with a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, authorities were unable to identify the victim because the victim had no identification. However, Richardson was later identified due to a missing persons report filed by his family. According to prosecutors, a friend had seen the victim at the apartment complex in the back seat of a black Dodge Dart selling marijuana to two people. As they drove off, the witness identified the vehicle's driver as Davis’ co-defendant, Detavion McDay. It was the last time anyone had seen Richardson, and his family was alerted.
Soon, McDay was arrested and told investigators the defendant had planned and arranged the marijuana deal as a pretense to rob the victim. He also told authorities that Davis had been the shooter while he drove the vehicle. In addition, authorities retrieved security video footage that showed McDay’s car leaving the parking lot where Richardson’s body was found.
In March 2020, McDay received a 40-year sentence with the possibility of parole after serving 25 years. He pleaded guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter and other related charges.
The judge sentenced Davis to an additional 20 years for the other charges.
Richardson was a high school football star who graduated a few days before his demise, reported The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
