An Iowa man who killed his father in cold blood will remain behind bars for the rest of his life.
A Webster County judge handed Alec Jones, 26, a life term in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of 55-year-old Dennis Jones. After two hours of deliberation, Jones was found guilty and convicted of first-degree murder.
"We are pleased with the jury's verdict. The work of the Fort Dodge Police Department, Webster County Sheriff's Office, and the Iowa DCI helped secure justice for Dennis Jones and his family," said First Assistant Webster County Attorney Brad McIntyre, according to KCCI Des Moines.
In the afternoon of April 26, authorities responded to a ditch along the 2100 mile of 280th Street. After a mail carrier found a body that was later identified as Dennis Jones. Upon arrival, they found the victim had suffered three gunshot wounds in the torso, forehead, and above the ears, according to an autopsy report.
During the interview, Jones admitted to fatally shooting his father after Dennis Jones struck his wife and the defendant’s mother, Shannon Jones, in the face during a heated argument. As a result, Jones told investigators he decided to put an end to the abuse, with the defendant sending a text that night and stating someone was going to die.
Later, the defendant shot Dennis Jones as the victim exited his bedroom.
Before his demise, Dennis Jones had called 911 to report a threat against his life by his sons and his daughter, Megan Thacker, who was not a resident at the family home anymore. Before Thacker reached the residence, the video showed Jones and his brother getting into a vehicle driven by an acquaintance, Aiden Pate, with his girlfriend, Makayla McNeilly. Authorities tracked the group’s cell phone records, which showed where the defendant had disposed of the murder weapon, Dennis Jones’s cell phone, and a black glove before dumping the victim in the ditch. Video footage also showed Jones and Nathan Jones with cleaning supplies at the residence.
In the course of the sentencing hearing, Shannon Jones wept loudly until deputies removed her from the courtroom, reported The Daily Freeman-Journal.
Nathan Jones was charged with aiding and abetting murder in the first degree.
