A man was arrested and charged with shooting death of Clemson University’s former wide receiver Diondre Overton, police say.
"It just took the wind out of my body this morning. I love Diondre Overton. He's one of the best teammates that we've had come through," said Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, according to Greenville News.
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, with the aid of the U.S. Marshall Service, arrested 20-year-old Jeremiah Diago Blanks in Detroit, Michigan. Blanks was charged with felony first-degree murder and is currently awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
On Sept. 7, officers arrived at a residence in Greensboro after receiving reports of a loud party and noise disturbance. Upon their arrival, they were informed a shooting had taken place and found Overton with a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of first responders with life-saving measures, the 26-year-old wide receiver was declared dead at the scene.
"He truly was one of the sweetest, spirited kids that we've had come through here and, again, truly a great teammate," said Swinney, reported CBS News.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Overton was a native of Greensboro. He graduated from Page High School and played for Clemson from 2016 to 2019. He earned a degree in sports communication.
