A Denver man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he killed his wife and dumped her body along the road.
Judge Ericka Englert handed Jonathan Nuno-Mijangos a life term in prison without the possibility of parole for the strangulating death of his wife, Jasmin Cigarroa, 24. Nuno-Mijangos was found guilty and convicted by an Adam County jury of first-degree murder, first-degree assault, tampering with a deceased body, and abuse of a corpse.
“It has been three years and 5 months since we lost Jasmin and today justice was finally served when Jonathan received his sentence of life in prison. Jasmin can finally rest peacefully,” stated the victim’s brother Francisco Cigarroa, according to Law & Crime.
On March 10, 2021, officers responded to the couple’s home in the 7500 Block of E. 28th Avenue after they received a call from Nuno-Mijangos claiming his wife was missing. During an initial interview, the defendant told authorities his wife had texted him a day prior to inform him she would be going out with friends later in the day, but she never returned. However, Cigarroa’s car and phone were still at the residence.
Later, investigators got a tip from a neighbor who heard a loud boom around 11 am on March 9, 2021, followed by Cigarroa’s dog barking. The same neighbor later sighted Nuno-Mijangos pulling out of the garage with his wife’s car and moving his car inside. Furthermore, authorities discovered the victim had logged on to work in the wee hours of the day she disappeared but never logged out. As a result, investigators interviewed one of Cigarroa’s colleagues, who told them they had made plans to meet with the victim that evening, but she never showed up. Later, they had gone to her home but couldn’t reach Cigarroa either.
During the investigation, Nuno-Mijangos told authorities he had been home after returning from work, but they tracked Nuno-Mijangos’s movement using his phone records and data. Pings from phone towers showed the defendant was near E. 26th Avenue and Powhaton Road, where they found Cigarroa’s body in a shallow grave wrapped in a black plastic bag with duct tape.
Prosecutors believe the motive for the killing was due to domestic violence.
Previously, the victim had filed charges of physical against her husband after he had grabbed her throat while pinning her down on the bed during an argument. As a result, Nuno-Mijangos was charged with second-degree assault before her demise.
“Jasmin Cigarroa was a hard-working, intelligent and loving woman whose death at such a young age, and at the hands of her husband, was a terrible tragedy. I want to commend the members of my office and the Denver Police Department who worked on the case, as well as the members of the jury, for holding Mr. Nuno-Mijangos accountable for this senseless murder,” said Denver District Attorney McCann, according to Denver 7.
