A North Carolina woman shot and killed her boyfriend after attempting to leave the relationship. Now, she will never walk free again.

Recently, Buncombe County Superior Court Judge Steve Warren sentenced Shannon Nicole Daves to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of Roger Michael Evans. Daves, who was initially tried, which led to a mistrial, was found guilty at the second trial by a jury of first-degree murder.

“I thank the family of Michael Evans for their patience and support over these past three and a half years and two complete jury trials. I am relieved and gratified that their patience ended with accountability for Daves,” said Assistant District Attorney Kyle Sherard, according to Citizen Times.

On Dec. 23, 2020, officers responded to the couple’s home on Copper Mill Court in Candler and found Evans' body with a gunshot wound to the chest. According to prosecutors, the couple had returned from a night of drinking when a heated argument ensued. Later, authorities found video footage from a Furbo pet monitoring camera that showed the 50-year-old defendant pointing a gun at Evans and then fatally shooting him. An American Arms Guardian .32 ACP handgun was found at the scene.

An autopsy report showed he died from a gunshot wound to the chest, abdomen, and legs.

In a span of six years, the couple's relationship had been tumultuous, with the duo being found with guns. As a result, Daves’ defense team used an audio section of the video footage to claim the defendant’s action was due to self-defense. However, the camera never recorded any evidence of physical assault.

Family members testified Evans was attempting to leave the relationship.

In a rebuttal, prosecutors argued the defendant had a history of being controlling and manipulating. The jury agreed!

“I thank the jurors for their conscientious deliberations to reach this verdict in this senseless and tragic case and wish the Evans family peace and healing. If you are a victim of domestic violence please contact law enforcement and the Buncombe County Family Justice Center for immediate assistance,” said District Attorney Todd Williams, reported FOX Carolina.
