A Wyoming woman in an altercation with her boyfriend killed him after he begged for his life. Now, she will spend the rest of her life behind bars.

A Kent County Circuit Judge Paul Denenfeld sentenced Sakina Muhammad, 23, to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of 27-year-old Kwan Andre Winston Jr. After a three-day trial, Muhammad was found guilty and convicted of first-degree murder and felony firearm.

"You deserve what you deserve. Karma has no expiration date. Nor does Karma discriminate. 674 days we've been living a with a hole in our hearts," said Winston's mother during the sentencing hearing, according to WZZM 13

Around 10 pm on March 13, 2022, officers responded to an apartment on Taft Avenue SW in Wyoming after receiving a distress call from Muhammad’s parents about an ongoing domestic dispute at the residence. Upon arrival, they found Winston at the bottom of the stairwell, slumped against a door with a gunshot wound to the head. Meanwhile, the defendant had fled the scene with her 11-month-old daughter.

The next day, Muhammad was arrested and placed in custody while she claimed the fatal incident was due to self-defense. However, according to prosecutors, witnesses living below the couple heard the victim begging for his life and asking Muhammad to allow him to leave. Instead, they heard the defendant tell Winston he was going to die.

“‘No, bro, you’re dead,’” and “‘Yo bro, you’re gonna die,’” said Muhammad before the neighbors heard a single shot followed by silence, reported MLive.

During the trial, the defense team argued Muhammad had been defending herself after Winston choked her. On two occasions, the defense submitted court records that showed Winston pleaded no contest to attempted strangulation of the defendant in March 2020 and January 2022.

However, the jury disagreed!

Though the relationship was toxic and volatile, neighbors testified Muhammad had always been the aggressor.

Mohammad apologized to her daughter and told the court she disagreed with their findings.  The judge ordered her to serve an additional 24 months for the felony firearm conviction.
