A Texas man killed an officer who responded to his home on a domestic call. Now, he will spend the rest of his life in prison.

105th District Judge Jack Pulcher sentenced Alfredo Deleon, 40, to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of Kingsville Police Officer Sherman Benys. In order to avoid the death penalty, Deleon pleaded guilty to 12 counts of felonies, including capital murder, attempted capital murder, and assault on his own family.

"You tried stack sentence just to make sure that even if the law changes, even if there's some type of court, that says no more life without parole, the sentences are still stacked, he needs to spend the rest of his life in prison," said Kleberg County District Attorney John Hubert, reported 3 News.

On Nov. 1, 2021, the Kingsville Police Department responded to the 300 Block of South Wanda after reports of a domestic dispute. Upon their arrival, Deleon opened fire on the officers, striking Benys before running away from the scene. While other officers administered first aid to the victim, others chased the defendant along South 11th Street and Miller before placing him into custody.

Benys was immediately air-lifted to Corpus Christi Hospital, where he later succumbed to his wound.

Prosecutors agreed on a plea deal that would guarantee the defendant would never walk free again. Nevertheless, Deleone apologized to Benys’ family and told them, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to do it,” reported Kris 6 News.

Benys was a 19-year veteran of the Kingsville Police Department.
