A Kansas man who killed his mother a few months after being released from prison was sentenced to life in prison.

A Sedgwick County District Court judge handed Kyle Romey, 44, of Goddard, a life term in prison for the brutal death of his mother, Denyce Briet. Romey was found guilty and convicted by a jury of first-degree murder.

On Oct. 6, 2021, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department responded to a trailer home along the 15300 Block of U.S. 54 after a request for a welfare check on the 67-year-old victim. Upon arrival and no response at the door, deputies made a forced entry into the residence. There, they found Briet’s body on the floor of the home with evidence of blunt-force trauma, according to 12 News.

Investigators soon received a tip from a caller after they responded to the 1000 Block of West Dayton. The caller reportedly identified the defendant as the plausible suspect responsible for the death of Briet. Later, deputies arrested Romey near Taft and Water in Wichita wearing clothes that were blood-stained.

According to prosecutors, the defendant was a known entity to law enforcement officers and had a history of violence with his family. He was previously paroled from prison six months before the fatal incident, reported JC Post.

The motive for the killing remains unclear.

The defendant was previously convicted of felon in possession of a weapon, aggravated battery, criminal threat, and great bodily harm.

Romey will be eligible for parole after 653 months (over 54 years).
