A California man killed a man for chastising him for peeping into a car nearby car. Now, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Latterly, Circuit Court Judge Daliah Weiss sentenced Claudio Ivan Valdiviezo Samayoa to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting death of Jamal Drummond, 23. Though Samayoa's first trial ended in a mistrial, the second jury found him guilty and convicted him of first-degree pre-meditated murder with a firearm.

On Oct. 15, 2021, the Palm Beach Police Department responded to a Holiday Inn Express on 45th Street, west of I-95, after receiving reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found Drummond’s body on the ground with a gunshot wound to the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to CBS 12 News, the defendant had approached Drummond and two other witnesses while they smoked cigarettes in the parking lot.  Then, Samayoa asked if they had seen a young girl in a picture that was on his phone. They all denied ever seeing the girl before the defendant started peeking into one of the cars nearby. As a result, Drummond chastised Samayoa who walked away into the hotel. Later, witnesses heard gunshots and saw the defendant running towards the gas station across the streets to a waiting car.

A few weeks later, authorities tracked down the car and discovered it was an Uber service the Samayoa had commissioned using cash instead of the service’s platform. The Uber driver identified Samayoa as the passenger he dropped at the hotel and who ran into his car after the shooting. In addition to witness identification, investigators retrieved security video footage that showed the suspect matching the exact features of Samayoa.

Authorities also tracked the defendant’s movement through his phone log, which corroborated the Uber driver’s account of the event leading to the homicide.

The motive still remains unclear.

After the first trial, prosecutors offered Samayoa a plea bargain with a reduced charge of manslaughter to serve 15 years in prison. He declined the offer!
